VOLKSWAGEN AUTO MOTORS

  Volkswagen Polo
Volkswagen Polo
Volkswagen Polo
The Polo is a very grown up supermini. Ride quality is excellent, with the softly suspended supermini smoothing out city centre bumps well. It feels very much like a mini Golf, though this does mean that, while handling is safe and secure, there is more roll through corners than sportier rivals, and driver involvement is lacking. Steering is light and a little lacking in feel. Smaller petrol engines need working hard and are fun when you're in the mood, frustrating when you're not. Larger petrol units are better and diesels satisfyingly torquey, if a little rattly. Really, the extra pace of the Polo suits its long distance cruising ability well.
  Volkswagen Touran
Volkswagen Touran
Volkswagen Touran

Summary: The Touran looks dull and won't fire up enthusiasts, but it's a fine family car. It's very versatile and the well-built cabin is up to anything that can be thrown at it. + Well built cabin, individual seats, free seven-seat option, cosseting ride - Small boot in 7st guise, boxy styling, not that exciting to drive Driving The Touran's driving experience strikes a good balance between comfort and cornering ability. It rolls a little and doesn't change direction quite as keenly as some sportier alternatives, but always feels stable and composed, while the steering is fluid and well weighted. VW includes stability control as standard. Crucially, a cosseting ride means the cabin is well isolated and the whole driving experience is relaxing. Engines will be familiar to VW owners - diesels sell best but, as the 1.9-litre TDI is getting on, we'd recommend the freer-revving 2.0-litre TDI. The 1.6-litre petrol is refined but needs to be worked hard, while the 1.4-litre TSI is an intriguing choice with lots of low-down shove and fair economy if driven steadily. Marketplace The Touran has been a big success for VW - but most would agree it falls short in the looks department. The boxy shape and flat tailgate give it a van-like appearance; a facelift in early 2007 may have seen the company's latest corporate face grafted on, yet it's still visually unexciting. The Touran has some big-name seven-seat rivals, including Vauxhall's highly successful Zafira, the Renault Grand Scenic. Citroen C4 Grand Picasso and Toyota Corolla Verso. Sister company SEAT offers the cheaper Altea XL (using a similar platform and engine range), but this can seat only five. Owning The Touran may be unexciting from the outside, but the interior has stood the test of time. It's clear to see the quality and simplicity of the design. The large dials and high-mounted controls for the air con and audio systems are all well placed, plus the materials used throughout are good quality. There's also lots of cabin stowage, with large door pockets, a decent-sized glovebox and three small roof-mounted cubbyholes. In the middle row, the individual chairs offer fine shoulder room when seating three, and overall comfort is excellent. The additional pair of seats pull out of the boot floor easily, and although leg and headroom is tight, adults can squeeze into the back row. With the sixth and seventh chairs folded into the floor, luggage capacity is a commendable 695 litres - and even if the chairs are used only occasionally, they're worth having, as they don't cost a penny
  Volkswagen Golf
Volkswagen Golf
Volkswagen Golf

The Golf doesn't relish being hurried. It has a laid-back character, and is at its best when traveling at high speed. On motorways, very little wind noise penetrates the cabin. On smooth surfaces, the cruising ability is superb. But on bumpy roads, the softer suspension of regular models means there's a fair amount of roll and wallow. In short, the VW isn't as well controlled as exemplars such as the Ford Focus, and feel slightly lethargic. It turns in accurately enough, and the speed-sensitive steering is well weighted, but compared to the Focus, it's not a particularly engaging car to drive. Sport models, with stiffer, lower suspension, are better in this respect, with a small penalty in terms of ride quality. As for engines, the 1.6-litre FSI is the most popular petrol choice, but it isn't the last word in smoothness. It's quite at idle but is intrusive once on the move, and becomes coarse and boomy toward the upper reaches of its rev range. Yet it provides reasonable mid-range power. More impressive is the costlier 1.4-litre TSI unit, which combines supercharger and turbocharger to provide meaningful low-rev pull coupled with sprightly high-rev manners. It's a superb engine, with the performance of a larger unit yet the economy of a regular 1.6. There's also a 2.0-litre FSI that's likely to be phased out soon, plus a 1.4-litre entry-level engine that struggles with the Golf's weight. Brakes aren't class-leading due to the high kerbweight, too.
  Volkswagen Touareg
Volkswagen Touareg
Volkswagen Touareg

Volkswagen has thoroughly revamped the Touareg's engine lineup this year. A new, larger V6 engine makes 36 more horsepower than last year's V6, and a new V8 provides 40 more hp. It would also seem that the long-delayed diesel-fueled V10 is finally slated for a full year in 2007 after coming back from the dead in late 2006. Other upgrades this year include adaptive xenon headlights, an Apple iPod adapter, a power liftgate and remote keyless start.
  Volkswagen Rabbit
Volkswagen Rabbit
Volkswagen Rabbit

The new Volkswagen Rabbit, which is the next-generation VW Golf, but with the nostalgic, U.S.-only name last used in the early 1980s, was introduced late in the 2006 model year. For the 2007 Rabbit, VW adds an auxiliary audio input jack for MP3 players, an optional Apple iPod-specific adapter and an optional tire-pressure monitor. Cruise control actuation has also been simplified.
  Volkswagen Passat
Volkswagen Passat
Volkswagen Passat

Volkswagen fully redesigned the Passat sedan last year.A wagon version of the new VW Passat debuts. Other updates this year include the addition of a new adaptive cruise control system, an auxiliary input jack for the audio system, minor standard feature adjustments and the dropping of the "Value Editon" nomenclature.
  Volkswagen New Beetle
Volkswagen New Beetle
Volkswagen New Beetle
olkswagen New Beetle isn't so new anymore. Other competing two-door hatchbacks and convertibles offer more features and more power, and are more fun to drive.

The New Beetle TDI has been discontinued because its diesel-fueled engine didn't meet new government emission standards. Otherwise, there are no other major changes to the VW Beetle.
  Volkswagen Jetta
Volkswagen Jetta
Volkswagen Jetta
A few changes occur on the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta. Good news for consumers: VW has lowered the car's price by an average of $1,400 without making any significant cuts in feature content. The company says the change is to foster increased competitiveness against Asian-brand sedans. On the downside, the popular diesel-fueled Jetta TDI has been discontinued due to its inability to pass new 2007 government emissions tests. Look for it to return next year. Other updates for the '07 Jetta include the return of the Wolfsburg Edition sedan (which has the 2.5-liter engine and standard leatherette upholstery), a new Apple iPod adapter, simplified cruise control actuation, a standard tire-pressure monitor and, as options, a 115-volt power outlet and Homelink transmitter. Finally, VW has renamed the base-level Value Edition trim level just "Jetta."
  Volkswagen GTI
Volkswagen GTI
Volkswagen GTI
With varying degrees of success, the Volkswagen GTI has always promised engaging performance and real-world practicality

Other than that, changes are minor, as VW's hot hatch was redesigned midway through 2006. Updates include a slightly lower ride height, restyled alloy wheels (late availability), standard launch control for the DSG transmission, a standard tire-pressure monitor and simplified cruise-control actuation. On the audio front, there's a new standard auxiliary input jack and an optional Apple iPod-specific adapter.
  Volkswagen Eos
Volkswagen Eos
Volkswagen Eos
Able to transform from a wind-in-your-hair convertible to a coupe with a panoramic sunroof, the 2007 Volkswagen Eos is not to be missed if you're shopping for a four-place drop top in the $30K-$40K price range.
VW Eos is an all-new four-seat convertible with a retractable hardtop.
